The iSkim wins its category on one number, and because that number is the right number it is not a close contest.
9 liters, and why nothing else matters as much
A skimmer with a full basket is a floating ornament. Solar charging, app control, navigation — all of it only matters while there is room in the basket. So the real specification is how many hours of leaf fall it absorbs before someone walks out to empty it.
The iSkim publishes 9 liters. The Aiper EcoSurfer S2 publishes 4. Betta describes its basket as “extra large” and publishes nothing.
Under a mature oak in October, 4 liters is a twice-a-day chore and 9 liters is a once-a-day one. Across a six-week fall season that is roughly forty trips to the pool you do not make. For context, 9 liters is also nearly double the entire debris capacity of Beatbot’s own 5-liter floor robots. The head-to-head against the EcoSurfer sets it out.
Anti-stranding is not a gimmick
The characteristic skimmer failure is beaching: wind pushes it into a corner or onto a tanning ledge and it sits there doing nothing for the afternoon. Beatbot publishes anti-stranding alongside dual-ultrasonic obstacle avoidance, which is the most comprehensive approach on this site.
It does not eliminate the problem — nothing does — but combined with app recall, dealing with it becomes a tap on your phone rather than a trip out with a pole. Auto return does the same job unprompted.
Salt-safe, which not every skimmer is
Beatbot states salt compatibility explicitly. That matters more for a skimmer than for a floor robot: a surface machine spends its entire life at the air-water interface, where corrosion is worst, and salt is harder on bearings and fasteners than chlorine. Aiper does not state salt compatibility for the EcoSurfer S2, so do not assume it.
24/7 on solar
It runs all day at no running cost, which is the fundamental appeal of the category. Beatbot publishes a 10,000 mAh pack to ride through cloudy spells.
The structural caveat applies to every solar skimmer: the shade that creates your leaf problem is the shade that limits solar charging. In deep continuous shade, plan on intervening.
The two honest limitations
Surface only. It will never touch your floor, walls or waterline. A skimmer is a complement to a floor robot and never a substitute — which is also the basis of the best-value combination on this site: a corded floor machine plus a solar skimmer beats most single flagships on total debris removed, for less money. That comparison works the numbers.
A full 9-liter basket of wet leaves is heavy. That is the arithmetic working as intended, but it is a real lift.
How we assessed it, and what we did not do
Every figure in the specification table on this page is attributed: to Beatbot’s published specifications, to the Amazon listing for this exact model, or marked as not published where neither source gives a figure. The score is derived from those published numbers by the five-metric rubric, which is published in full.
We have not physically tested this machine. We do not run a test pool, we do not own this unit, and nothing on this site claims otherwise. What we do instead is show where every number comes from, say plainly who the machine is wrong for, and refuse to print a figure we cannot source. Where owner reports inform a point, they are described as owner reports — never as our own experience.
Who should skip it
Skip the Beatbot iSkim if you want one machine to do everything, or your pool is in deep shade where a solar panel cannot keep up.
That is not a throwaway line. The most expensive mistake in this category is buying a capable machine that is wrong for your pool — and a machine rated below your pool’s area or missing the one capability your debris requires cannot be fixed by any setting.
Alternatives worth considering
- Aiper EcoSurfer S2 — adds a chlorine dispenser and a 35-hour battery, with a 4-liter basket. Read the review
- Betta SE — proven over several seasons and rated for above-ground pools, with no published basket volume. Read the review
- Beatbot Sora 70 — one machine that skims and cleans the floor, if you would rather not buy two. Read the review
If you are still narrowing down, the selector tool works from your pool type, size, surface and dominant debris, and the Beatbot brand guide covers the whole range and where it stops.
