The Best Robotic Pool Skimmers

A leaf you catch at the surface never sinks, never stains and never needs vacuuming. For a pool under trees, a skimmer is the highest-leverage machine you can buy — as the second machine.

It does not change which products we pick or the order we rank them in — here is the method and the full disclosure. Prices are live from Amazon, checked November 6, 2026.

The Beatbot iSkim is the best robotic pool skimmer: a 9-liter basket, more than twice any rival here, which is the one spec that decides a skimmer. The Aiper EcoSurfer S2 adds a chlorine dispenser; the Betta SE is the cheapest proven option.

What actually decides this

A surface skimmer is the most misunderstood machine in pool care. It does not clean your pool. It intercepts debris in the roughly four-hour window between landing on the water and sinking — and in that window a leaf is weightless, unstained and trivially easy to remove. Once it sinks, the same leaf becomes a job for a robot, a stain on your plaster, and a load on your filter.

That is why a skimmer is worth owning alongside a floor robot and worthless as a substitute for one.

Basket volume is the only spec that matters

Everything else on a skimmer’s box is secondary. A skimmer with a full basket is a floating ornament, so the question is simply how many hours of leaf fall it absorbs before it needs emptying. The Beatbot iSkim publishes 9 liters. The Aiper EcoSurfer S2 publishes 4. Betta describes its basket as “extra large” and publishes no figure, which we note rather than guess at. During peak fall, a 4-liter basket under a mature oak is a twice-a-day chore and a 9-liter basket is a once-a-day one.

Solar is genuinely free, with one catch

These machines run on a solar panel and a battery, so the running cost is zero and the duty cycle is all day, every day. The catch is structural: the shade that creates your leaf problem is the same shade that limits solar charging. All three machines here carry a battery large enough to ride through cloudy spells — Aiper publishes 35 hours, Beatbot publishes a 10,000 mAh pack — and the iSkim and EcoSurfer both support dual charging so you can top them up from mains when a week of rain coincides with a week of leaf fall.

Anti-stranding is not a gimmick

The characteristic skimmer failure is beaching: wind pushes it into a corner or onto a tanning ledge and it sits there all afternoon doing nothing. Beatbot calls its answer anti-stranding, Aiper calls it edge cleaning, and Betta uses obstacle avoidance. All three help; none eliminates it. If your pool has a prevailing-wind corner you will still be nudging it occasionally — but app recall (iSkim, EcoSurfer) means nudging it from your phone rather than with a pole.

The one-machine alternative

If the idea of buying two machines is the objection, the Beatbot Sora 70 is on this page for a reason: it skims the surface and cleans the floor, walls and waterline in the same cycle. It is more expensive than a skimmer and a budget robot combined, it splits its runtime between two jobs, and for a lot of tree-shaded pools it is still the right call. Aiper versus Beatbot on skimmers compares the dedicated units head to head.

Full Beatbot iSkim review

A 9-liter basket is more than twice the capacity of any other solar skimmer here — if your problem is volume of falling leaves, this is the one that does not need emptying twice a day.

Water typeSaltwater-safe(retailer listing)

What works

  • 9 L basket — the largest here, and basket volume is the whole game for a skimmer
  • Anti-stranding genuinely matters: a beached skimmer cleans nothing all afternoon
  • App recall brings it to the edge rather than you reaching with a pole
  • Saltwater-rated, which not every skimmer is

What doesn't

  • Surface only, like every skimmer
  • Solar output drops under heavy tree cover — the same shade that creates your leaf problem
  • A 9 L basket full of wet leaves is heavy to lift out

Who should skip this

Skip this one if you want one machine to do everything, or your pool is in deep shade where a solar panel cannot keep up.

Aiper EcoSurfer S2

Best extra features

A solar skimmer with a 4-liter basket and a chlorine dispenser that works the surface 24/7 — it does not clean your floor, and that is the point.

What works

  • Catches leaves and pollen before they sink, which is the cheapest debris removal there is
  • Solar charging means it runs all day at no running cost
  • The chlorine dispenser distributes sanitizer as it moves rather than from one corner
  • 35 hours of battery means it keeps working through cloudy spells

What doesn't

  • Surface only — it will never touch your floor, walls or waterline
  • A skimmer is a second purchase, not a replacement for a cleaner
  • Wind pushes any surface robot into a corner; edge detection mitigates it but does not solve it

Who should skip this

Skip this one if you only want to buy one machine. A skimmer is a complement to a floor robot, never a substitute.

Betta SE

Best proven budget option

The longest-running solar skimmer design on the market, salt-safe and usable in both pool types — the budget-sane alternative to the Beatbot iSkim.

What works

  • Several seasons of owner feedback behind it, which no 2026 skimmer has
  • Works in above-ground pools, where most skimmers assume a hard edge
  • Salt-rated
  • Cheaper than the app-controlled skimmers while doing the same job

What doesn't

  • No published basket volume, so it cannot be compared to the iSkim's 9 L on paper
  • Remote control rather than an app — no scheduling, no recall from your phone
  • Surface only

Who should skip this

Skip this one if you want app scheduling, or you need a published basket figure to size against your leaf load.

Beatbot Sora 70

Best all-in-one alternative

The only machine here that skims the surface and cleans the floor in the same cycle without being a $2,300 flagship — the right answer for a pool under heavy tree cover.

What works

  • Surface plus submerged cleaning in one unit, for roughly $800 less than the AquaSense 2 Ultra
  • Catching leaves at the surface stops them sinking and staining — it is the single highest-leverage feature for a tree-shaded pool
  • Full five-surface coverage including platforms
  • Tap-to-retrieve, so a 25 lb robot is never a swim away

What doesn't

  • No published micron rating
  • A machine doing two jobs splits its runtime between them
  • At $1,499 it is competing with corded Dolphins that never need charging

Who should skip this

Skip this one if you have no overhanging trees. Without a surface debris problem, the Sora 30 does the submerged work for half the price.

Questions people actually ask

Does a pool skimmer robot replace a pool cleaner?

No. A skimmer works the surface only and will never touch your floor, walls or waterline. It reduces how much debris reaches the floor, which makes your floor robot more effective — it does not replace it.

Do solar pool skimmers work in the shade?

Less well, which is the awkward part given that shade is usually why you need one. Every model here carries a battery sized to ride through cloudy periods, and the iSkim and EcoSurfer accept a mains top-up. In deep continuous shade, plan on charging it manually.

Will a skimmer robot work in an above-ground pool?

The Betta SE is explicitly rated for both above-ground and inground pools. Check the listing for the others — several skimmers assume a hard coping edge for their docking and recall behavior.

How often do you empty a robotic pool skimmer?

Daily in leaf season, every few days otherwise. This is entirely a function of basket volume against your leaf load, which is why basket volume is the spec to buy on.

Are robotic pool skimmers safe with salt water?

The Beatbot iSkim and Betta SE are both explicitly rated salt-safe. Do not assume it for a model that does not state it — salt is harder on bearings and fasteners than chlorine.
