Betta SE Review (2026) — Who It's Actually For

The longest-running solar skimmer design on the market, salt-safe and usable in both pool types — the budget-sane alternative to the Beatbot iSkim.

How this page is funded: we earn an Amazon commission on qualifying purchases made through links here, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or the order we rank them in — here is the method and the full disclosure. Prices are live from Amazon, checked November 6, 2026.

The Betta SE is the longest-established solar pool skimmer here: salt-safe, rated for both above-ground and inground pools, and cheaper than the app-controlled alternatives. Its weakness is that it publishes no basket volume, which is the spec that decides a skimmer.

What actually decides this

The Betta SE is the skimmer to buy if you want one that has been in the market long enough for its problems to be known. Every other solar skimmer on this site is a 2024-2026 model; this design has several seasons of owner feedback behind it.

What it gets right

Salt-rated. Betta states salt and chlorine compatibility explicitly. Salt is harder on bearings and fasteners than chlorine, and a surface skimmer spends its entire life at the air-water interface where corrosion is worst. Not every skimmer states this, and you should not assume it.

Works in above-ground pools. Most skimmers implicitly assume a hard coping edge for their docking and recall behavior. Betta rates the SE for both pool types, which makes it one of the few genuine options for an above-ground pool — where a skimmer is unusually valuable, because above-ground pools are shallow and their built-in skimmers are typically small single-basket units. The above-ground roundup covers why.

Obstacle avoidance and continuous solar operation. It runs all day at no running cost, which is the fundamental appeal of the whole category: debris caught floating never sinks, never stains and never loads your filter.

The gap: no published basket volume

Betta describes the basket as “extra large” and gives no figure. That is a real problem, because basket volume is the one specification that decides a skimmer. A skimmer with a full basket is a floating ornament, so the only question that matters is how many hours of leaf fall it absorbs before you walk out to empty it.

For comparison: Beatbot publishes 9 liters for the iSkim and Aiper publishes 4 for the EcoSurfer S2. “Extra large” could be either. We are not going to estimate it, and if you are under a mature oak the Beatbot’s published figure is the safer purchase — compared head to head here.

Remote control, not an app

The SE uses a remote rather than a phone app. That means no scheduling and no recall from indoors — if the wind pins it in a corner, you deal with it at the poolside rather than from the kitchen. The iSkim’s app recall is genuinely more useful, and it is the main feature difference at this price.

And the thing every skimmer owner should know

It cleans the surface only. It will never touch your floor, walls or waterline. A skimmer is a complement to a floor robot, not a substitute — and the pairing of a corded floor machine with a solar skimmer removes more total debris than most single flagships, for less money. The skimmer roundup makes that case properly.

One more structural caveat: solar output drops under heavy tree cover, which is usually the reason you want a skimmer in the first place. In deep continuous shade, plan on charging it.

How we assessed it, and what we did not do

Every figure in the specification table on this page is attributed: to Betta’s published specifications, to the Amazon listing for this exact model, or marked as not published where neither source gives a figure. The score is derived from those published numbers by the five-metric rubric, which is published in full.

We have not physically tested this machine. We do not run a test pool, we do not own this unit, and nothing on this site claims otherwise. What we do instead is show where every number comes from, say plainly who the machine is wrong for, and refuse to print a figure we cannot source. Where owner reports inform a point, they are described as owner reports — never as our own experience.

Who should skip it

Skip the Betta SE if you want app scheduling, or you need a published basket figure to size against your leaf load.

That is not a throwaway line. The most expensive mistake in this category is buying a capable machine that is wrong for your pool — and a machine rated below your pool’s area or missing the one capability your debris requires cannot be fixed by any setting.

Alternatives worth considering

  • Beatbot iSkim — a published 9-liter basket and app recall, for about $10 less. Read the review
  • Aiper EcoSurfer S2 — adds a chlorine dispenser and a 35-hour battery, at a similar price. Read the review
  • Beatbot Sora 70 — one machine that skims and cleans the floor, if you would rather not buy two. Read the review

If you are still narrowing down, the selector tool works from your pool type, size, surface and dominant debris, and the brands hub covers how the manufacturers compare.

What works

  • Several seasons of owner feedback behind it, which no 2026 skimmer has
  • Works in above-ground pools, where most skimmers assume a hard edge
  • Salt-rated
  • Cheaper than the app-controlled skimmers while doing the same job

What doesn't

  • No published basket volume, so it cannot be compared to the iSkim's 9 L on paper
  • Remote control rather than an app — no scheduling, no recall from your phone
  • Surface only

Full Beatbot iSkim review

A 9-liter basket is more than twice the capacity of any other solar skimmer here — if your problem is volume of falling leaves, this is the one that does not need emptying twice a day.

What works

  • 9 L basket — the largest here, and basket volume is the whole game for a skimmer
  • Anti-stranding genuinely matters: a beached skimmer cleans nothing all afternoon
  • App recall brings it to the edge rather than you reaching with a pole
  • Saltwater-rated, which not every skimmer is

What doesn't

  • Surface only, like every skimmer
  • Solar output drops under heavy tree cover — the same shade that creates your leaf problem
  • A 9 L basket full of wet leaves is heavy to lift out

Who should skip this

Skip this one if you want one machine to do everything, or your pool is in deep shade where a solar panel cannot keep up.

Aiper EcoSurfer S2

adds a chlorine dispenser and a 35-hour battery, at a similar price

A solar skimmer with a 4-liter basket and a chlorine dispenser that works the surface 24/7 — it does not clean your floor, and that is the point.

What works

  • Catches leaves and pollen before they sink, which is the cheapest debris removal there is
  • Solar charging means it runs all day at no running cost
  • The chlorine dispenser distributes sanitizer as it moves rather than from one corner
  • 35 hours of battery means it keeps working through cloudy spells

What doesn't

  • Surface only — it will never touch your floor, walls or waterline
  • A skimmer is a second purchase, not a replacement for a cleaner
  • Wind pushes any surface robot into a corner; edge detection mitigates it but does not solve it

Who should skip this

Skip this one if you only want to buy one machine. A skimmer is a complement to a floor robot, never a substitute.

Beatbot Sora 70

one machine that skims and cleans the floor, if you would rather not buy two

The only machine here that skims the surface and cleans the floor in the same cycle without being a $2,300 flagship — the right answer for a pool under heavy tree cover.

What works

  • Surface plus submerged cleaning in one unit, for roughly $800 less than the AquaSense 2 Ultra
  • Catching leaves at the surface stops them sinking and staining — it is the single highest-leverage feature for a tree-shaded pool
  • Full five-surface coverage including platforms
  • Tap-to-retrieve, so a 25 lb robot is never a swim away

What doesn't

  • No published micron rating
  • A machine doing two jobs splits its runtime between them
  • At $1,499 it is competing with corded Dolphins that never need charging

Who should skip this

Skip this one if you have no overhanging trees. Without a surface debris problem, the Sora 30 does the submerged work for half the price.

Questions people actually ask

Is the Betta SE good for an above-ground pool?

Yes — it is one of the few skimmers explicitly rated for both above-ground and inground pools, rather than assuming a hard coping edge.

How big is the Betta SE's basket?

Betta describes it as extra large but does not publish a volume, which is a real gap on the one spec that decides a skimmer. The Beatbot iSkim publishes 9 liters.

Is the Betta SE safe in a salt pool?

Yes — Betta states salt and chlorine compatibility for this model explicitly.

Does the Betta SE have an app?

No — it uses a remote control, so there is no scheduling and no recall from indoors. The Beatbot iSkim and Aiper EcoSurfer S2 both have apps.

Does a skimmer replace a pool cleaner?

No. It works the surface only and never touches your floor, walls or waterline. It is a second machine that makes your first one more effective.
